Sedation Dentistry
Millions of Americans have some level of anxiety when it comes to dental appointments. Some have had a negative experience in the past. In other cases, parents may have passed down dental anxiety to children because of negative language regarding dental treatment.
At Shoreland Dental, we are understanding and know that it is a big step for some patients to even pick up the phone and call our office. That is why it is so important to us that once you are here, you have a comfortable and relaxing experience.
Every great experience in our office begins with our highly trained, gentle, and compassionate team. We pride ourselves in making even the most fearful patient feel at home. Patients often tell us that we have turned their dental phobia around!
Everyone needs a little help sometimes. For patients who have a fear of the dentist or concerns about stress during their treatment, we offer nitrous oxide sedation to help take the anxious edge off of their treatment.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide is a gas, also known as "sweet air" or "laughing gas," which helps patients relax during their treatment. It is a mild sedative that we deliver through a small nose mask, and it enters your system through your lungs. We blend it with oxygen during treatment and can control your sedation level throughout the procedure.
Nitrous oxide can make dental appointments more pleasant for our patients almost immediately because it is fast acting.
Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Sedation dentistry that features nitrous oxide provides a number of benefits for our patients. Not only does it create a sense of wellbeing, but it also helps reduce the levels of stress hormones caused by anxiety. Those stress hormones can act against our anesthetic and make it more difficult for you to get numb. Patients who take advantage of sedation dentistry have a better reaction to anesthetic.
Nitrous oxide is so safe that we can even use it with kids who are fearful of the dentist or who have a hard time relaxing enough to sit still during their treatment appointment. Nitrous oxide can also help reduce patients’ gag reflexes, making treatment more comfortable for them.
Because nitrous oxide enters and leaves your system quickly, we do not have to wait an hour or more for it to take effect and you will not need someone to drive you home. It will be safe for you to drive a few minutes after your appointment.
